The Larchmont United Methodist Church Preschool has been an educational ministry of LUMC for over eight decades. The school offers a program in a Christian environment that is consistent with established principles of childhood education. Confidence and readiness for further education are promoted within an ethical context. Membership in the church is by no means required to attend: the school is open to all children regardless of race or religion.
LUMC Preschool is led by a full-time director and its Board is composed of members of the church as well as parents of students. The school operates weekdays from September to June. The LUMC Preschool calendar closely parallels that of the Norfolk Public Schools. Our curriculum builds as the children transition from the different classes. Emphasis is placed on the whole child. Activities are conducted to reach all levels of development; social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual. Enrichment activities for all ages include art, music, chapel, and special events such as a Christmas and May Day program.
The two-year-old children are introduced to social interaction and a positive self-concept. Children are also introduced to color and shape recognition. Classes are held Tuesday/Thursday and Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 9am to noon.
Language development and alphabet recognition are emphasized while building social skills and self-esteem. Communication development is stressed, teaching the children to work cooperatively and independently. Enrollment is for two days or for three days each week from 9am to noon.
Older 3’s/Younger 4’s Program
This program is geared towards children that will miss the Virginia age for kindergarten. These children continue development of social skills, with a greater emphasis on number concepts and language development. Alphabet recognition and phonics are stressed in preparation for pre-kindergarten enrollment. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9am to noon.
The children are challenged in areas of language arts and number concepts individually and within a group setting. Dolch word lists and Manuscript handwriting skills are utilized in preparation for kindergarten in the public or private sectors of education. The children attend daily from 9am to 1pm.
Our Kindergarten program follows the Virginia SOL guidelines for academic standards. Each day will focus on literacy development through small group guided reading and writing concepts. Our Kindergarten will encourage STEM development (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through center based learning, creative play and individual supported instruction. Fine arts education will be broadened through classroom arts & crafts, weekly music instruction, and dramatic play.
Students will receive personal attention and instruction from Ms. Amy. Ms. Amy is a VA licensed elementary teacher who is a National Board Certified teacher (early childhood generalist ages 3-7) with a Masters in Education.
Class size is limited to ten students. Children must be five by September 30 to follow NPS enrollment guidelines, exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Kindergarten meets daily from 9:00am – 1:00pm.
