LUMC’s BEACON YOUTH or UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship) is a program for youth in grades 6-12. Youth meetings are held EVERY Sunday from 6:30-8pm. All ages meet together in a large group setting. The purpose of this group is to provide teenagers with a comfortable place for Christian fellowship. Parents and church members are encouraged to sign up as chaperones, too. Weekly emails and GROUPme messages keep everyone informed of what is happening.
In addition to just having fun, we are Youth with a purpose. Emphasis is placed on community service projects both locally and in a larger context. The largest service project that the LUMC youth supports is Park Place Soup Kitchen. During summer 2016, we invested in our own church with painting, cleaning, and leading service projects.
There are a variety of fun outings during the school year and over the Summer. We often go to movies, miniature golf, and have fellowship in member’s homes. The group currently consists of youth from several different settings. Youth from other churches are welcome at any time. We have members who attend public and private schools, as well as some who are home-schooled. We are always looking for new members and welcome any youth to our group. You do not have to be a member of the church, or any church, to attend BEACON YOUTH activities.
The Youth Sunday School Class (6th – 12th grade) meets weekly and covers a variety of topics such as current events and discussions of our faith in relation to modern issues. Come weekly to figure out what we have to snack on for breakfast!
Youth Council: The Youth council is an elected group of highly involved youth. This council and their adult advisors are the decision making body for the majority of youth events. Starting in the Fall of 2016, these committee members will be the voice of youth on other church-wide committees. Youth Council meets the first week of the month at 6-6:30 (some exceptions due to holidays/summer schedules).
